Downsizing and Don’t Know What to Do With all of Your Stuff?

For empty-nesters and seniors alike, downsizing can seem overwhelming. Over the years it’s easy to accumulate more and more “stuff” which can make the idea of decluttering and getting rid of all that “stuff” a daunting proposition.

At Junk Command, we often hear from people trying to downsize their home and possessions that they can’t even believe how much stuff they’ve acquired over the years, and they don’t even know where to start. Our Minneapolis junk removal services are here to help.

Make a Plan

When you are downsizing, it’s important to plan. Instead of “getting rid of some stuff,” and starting to throw things away, you’ll want to formulate a plan to help you stay calm and organized throughout the downsizing process.

  1. First, make a list of what you want to take, use yes or no as guide for whether to keep something or not, don’t pack or keep “maybe” items.
  2. Next, try tackling one room at a time to avoid becoming overwhelmed, think of the process in weeks as opposed to days. As soon as you find out you are downsizing, go ahead and start slowly getting rid of stuff around the house. If you see a pair of shoes you haven’t worn in years, go ahead and get rid of them. Remember, it’s small steps.
  3. Next, pick a room, and pack it, take only the important stuff, again yes or no. Move onto the next room and repeat this process. If you find yourself with tons of trash, there’s a few good ways to get rid of it.

Ways to Get Rid of Your Junk When Downsizing

Have a Garage/Yard Sale

When downsizing, the thought of organizing and hosting a garage/yard sale might not sound like a good use of time. But, if you’re not up against a deadline, having a garage sale is a great way to part with some of your unnecessary possessions, while making a little extra cash!

Sell Items Online

Along the same lines of a garage/yard sale, if you have enough time you might consider posting some of your unwanted possessions for sale on websites like Craigslist or eBay, or by using mobile apps such as OfferUp.

Hire a Junk Removal Company

If you find yourself with more trash and unwanted stuff than you know what to do with, you might want to consider hiring a residential junk removal company. When downsizing, you’ll more than likely have a ton of stuff you can’t take with you. Need a professional junk removal company in Minneapolis-St.Paul? Give Junk Command a call today!
