At Junk Command, making sure your appliances are recycled properly is as important to us as it is to the environment and the local community here in Minneapolis – St. Paul. The reality is, appliance waste has a major impact on our environment and whether you’re moving out, or just replacing old appliances, it’s important to be conscious of how your waste affects the rest of the planet and dispose of your belongings safely.
Every year, tons of appliances are disposed of incorrectly and end up in landfills all over the world. Many times, people don’t think about where their waste goes after it leaves their home, but refrigerators, for example, are filled with harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to the environment if they end up in a landfill.
Certain refrigerants and insulants are made up of chemicals that, if released into the environment, destroy the ozone layer. Other hazardous components in common appliances are used oils, PCBs, and Mercury. If any of these end up in landfills, they can contaminate the soil and groundwater, so it’s important to make sure they are reused or recycled properly.
Small appliances in particular, like toasters and microwaves, are mostly made up of plastic and metal so they are highly recyclable. Simply throwing these items in the trash is wasteful when parts can be reused instead of ending up landfills where they will take hundreds of years to break down.
Not only is it wasteful and bad for the environment to simply trash your appliances, but they’re also usually too bulky for regular trash pick-up services. Many curbside recycling programs, though, allow you to recycle a limited amount of large appliances in your curbside pick-up. Some cities require that you pay a fee for pick-up before placing them out while others require that you transport the appliance to the recycling facility yourself. It is best to look up the guidelines for your area before attempting recycling.
It is also a good idea to search for an appliance turn-in program in your area which may actually offer you money in return for your old appliance and some utilities companies give you discounts when you recycle your appliances and upgrade to a more energy efficient model.
Keep in mind that items that are still in good working condition can also be donated or sold for reuse to benefit another family in need. All in all, there are plenty of options for recycling your appliances, and there are plenty of resources out there to help you figure out the best way to recycle your appliances in Minneapolis or your local area.
